What bioenergy is
The word bioenergy comes from the Greek word “bios”, meaning life, and the word “energy”, meaning activity or strength. It refers to the life energy that runs through the body and connects body and mind.
The idea is not new. Traditional Chinese medicine speaks of “qi” energy flowing through the meridians. In the Indian tradition it is “prana”, the breath of life flowing through the energy centres, the chakras. In the West, a similar idea was long described as the vital force.
Bioenergy as it is practised in Croatia today connects these old ideas with work on a person’s physical and emotional state. It is often also called bioenergy therapy or energy medicine.
Bioenergy and bioenergy therapy: what is the difference
In everyday speech the two terms are used as synonyms; the difference lies in what they refer to.
- Bioenergy is a person’s life energy itself, but also the name most people use for the whole method.
- Bioenergy therapy is the professional term for working with that energy, that is, the treatment carried out by a trained therapist.
- A bioenergy therapist is the person who does this work.
When someone says they are “going for bioenergy”, they mean a bioenergy therapy treatment. That is why we use both terms on this page.
How bioenergy works
Bioenergy starts from the idea that the body has its own energy field, which changes under the influence of stress, fatigue, emotions and lifestyle. When energy gets held somewhere or is unevenly distributed, a person often feels it as tension, restlessness, exhaustion or difficulty relaxing.
The work pays particular attention to the energy centres, the chakras. The therapist assesses where the flow of energy has weakened or stalled and works to restore a calm, even flow.
The aim is not to “fix” a single symptom but to give the body the conditions to return to a state of relaxation and balance on its own. That is why many people experience bioenergy as care for the whole body rather than for one problem.
What a bioenergy treatment looks like
- Conversation. Everything starts with a personal conversation. Vlasta first listens to what brings you in and how you feel, then explains how she will work.
- Work with the energy field. During the treatment you sit or stand comfortably, fully clothed. Vlasta works with your energy field without physical contact and focuses on the areas that are most burdened.
- Conversation after the treatment. At the end there is time for a short conversation, Vlasta’s observations and answers to your questions.
Many people feel warmth, calm or a light tingling during the treatment, although everyone’s experience is different. You do not need to bring anything special: comfortable clothes are enough, and it is good to drink a glass of water after the treatment.
Treatments take place in a calm space in Zagreb, at Gospodska ulica 18. For people who cannot come in person there is also remote bioenergy therapy.
Why people most often come for bioenergy
People most often come for bioenergy when they feel that their body and mind cannot find calm on their own. The most common reasons are:
- long-term stress and the feeling of being constantly “on edge” (how stress affects the flow of energy)
- sleep problems (how bioenergy can help with insomnia)
- tension in the back and neck (back pain and energy imbalance)
- tiredness that rest does not fix
- a demanding period of life, restlessness and the feeling of being “stuck”
You do not need a specific problem to come for a treatment. Many people experience bioenergy as a form of self-care, similar to meditation or other ways of relaxing. You are also welcome if you are simply curious and hearing about bioenergy for the first time.
Bioenergy alongside conventional medicine
Bioenergy does not replace a medical examination or prescribed treatment; it complements them. If you have health problems that persist or get worse, the first step is always a doctor.
Vlasta has worked alongside conventional medicine since 2001, when she lectured at a congress on unconventional medicine in Zagreb. She has also trained in the basics of clinical psychiatry and psychology for therapists and healers. Read more in the article Vlasta Jašćur: Bioenergy and Conventional Medicine.
How to choose a bioenergy therapist
Anyone can call themselves a bioenergy therapist, so it is worth checking a few things before you go:
- Training and licence. Ask where the therapist trained and whether they are a member of a professional association, such as the Croatian Association for Natural, Energy and Spiritual Medicine (HUPED).
- Experience. Years of practice and the number of people a therapist has worked with say more than promises.
- An honest approach. A serious bioenergy therapist does not promise a cure and does not advise you to stop medical treatment.
- A conversation before the work. A treatment should begin with a conversation, not a ready-made recipe.
